Fifty years of anything is quite an accomplishment! Fifty years is definitely worth celebrating and replica U-Boat is celebrating it right. This made the Navitimer the first wrist chronograph to travel through space. The Aurora 7 a velocity of 17,532 mph and an altitude of 164 miles and the splashdown landing was 250 miles off course! But the Breitling Navitimer performed perfectly the throughout the whole excursion, even with all of the harsh conditions.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of this incredible accomplishment, Breitling has released a new Navitimer Cosmonaute Blacksteel model that is comprised of 1,962 pieces. The movement is 100% in-house and the Aurora 7 insignia is engraved on the caseback of the watch. The case is black steel, which is created using a highly resistant carbon-based coating. Staying true to the original watch in 1962, the black dial features a 24-hour display, which would have proved very vital during space travel to help determine whether it was day or night, and a mechanical hand-wound movement. It also has a power reserve of 70 hours, a chronograph feature, a dial aperture calendar, and is chronometer certified. Another feature that was certainly helpful for Carpenter is the watch’s water resistance of 3 bars. Because Carpenters landing was in the ocean, this water resistance was a necessity.
